Play list for 1/4/2007

1/4/2007 show featuring special guest Prog Rock expert Suzannarama. Suzannarama provides lots of fun facts about the bands!

YES - Perpetual Change

Wishbone Ash - Warrior
35 years & 38 albums and still performing. Played at the Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa last May.

Can - Oh Yeah (Tago Mago)
German band with a Japanese vocalist, Damo Suzuki, singing in English & Japanese & occasional invented languages. Later left the band to became a Jehova's Witness. 70-73 was their heyday, when Suzuki fronted. Fuck the grateful Dead, these guys had great jams.

Van Der Graaf Generator - Killer
named after a electrostatic machine used to accumulate a charge on a metal globe; dark atmosphere; gotta love Peter Hammill's voice. Robert Fripp (of King Crimson) guested on 2 albums.

Supersister - Radio
from the Netherlands; orig. Sweet OK Supersister. Influenced by zappa and soft machine.

ELP - Karn Evil 9
13-minutes (and this is the short version, but not the even shorter radio version) of pure progressive goodness.

Rush - Finding my Way (Chronicles)
I've seen Rush about 3 times in the mid-80s, and those Canooks put on a great show. I just love Geddy Lee, but not in a sexual way. I wish I still had my Moving Pictures tour jersey.

Porcupine Tree - Signify (Signify)
Started in 87 by Steven Wilson, who happens to dislike the progressive rock label. Has a more contemporary influences: ambient, more rock.

Atomic Rooster - Death Walks Behind You
formed in 69 with Carl Palmer (of ELP) and the organ player from the Crazy World of Arthur Brown.

Focus - Hocus Pocus
Another Dutch band, who hit big on both sides of the Atlantic. The track we just heard is from their 1971 release, Moving Waves. Full of quirky and energetic interludes that include flute riffs, accordion, whistling, falsetto singing, and yodeling.

Amon Duul II - Mozambique
Yay! Krautrock! Very gothic atmosphere with a hint of psychedelia, but also influenced by California acid rock. Formed in 1966 as Amon Duul, they considered themselves more of a free jazz trio and even lived in a commune.

Incidental Music: Exorcist 2 soundtrack by Ennio Morricone
